Rest in Peace Gordon Linney

One of the great ambassadors of figure skating in the Province of Manitoba, and all of Canada, passed away peacefully on October 29th. As a long time coach at Skate Winnipeg, he was a great influence to many skaters over the years as he tirelessly poured himself into his students both on and off the ice. The skating community was his local family and all of us will miss his laugh, his smile, his personal quirks and his passion for figure skating, politics and life as a whole. Few live life to the full like Gordon as he seemed to see each challenge as an opportunity to rise to the occasion and perservere. He had battled cancer far beyond what many thought possible and continued to coach and even travel as he wanted to soak in the beauty and nuances of the world we inhabit and the cultures that make it so colourful.

A celebration of his life will be held on November 6th at 11am at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau Street North, Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you are familiar with the area, parking will be a challenge so to avoid last second entrances, please plan ahead and allow time for parking and walking.

From all of us here at Skate Winnipeg, our sympathies are extended to his family as they come into Winnipeg to say goodbye to their Uncle. We will all miss him

Welcome to Skate Winnipeg's Pilot 1-4 StarSkate and CanSkate Fun Day.

Saturday May  31, 2014 marked the first time Star 1-4 competition at the
Jonathan Toews Community Centre.  This was an important day of Officials,
Coaches and Skater coming together to try out the Star program newly
implemented by Skate Canada.  In addition to the Star portion of the day, a
CanSkate Fun day was offered to those CanSkaters who were able to attend
from our 8 week Spring session.  the CanSkaters preformed 2 circuits that
pertained to the level of skating they had been working on in the sessions.
These skaters were assisted by professional Skate Winnipeg coaches as well
as our Program Assistants who's role it was to evaluate the skaters while
performing their skills.

The day was about learning and having fun,  each skater was awarded a ribbon
as well as an evaluation sheet expressing the level achieved for each skill
demonstrated.  These levels received on this day will be a bench mark for
those going forward to the next competition.   The CanSkaters then had fun
with bubbles and parachute games before they left the ice surface to receive
their Certificates and Ribbons.

Officials, coaches and skaters left with a better understanding of the New
Star Program and feel like the road ahead is definitely clearer.

Many Thanks  to the Officials, Program Assistant, Skate Winnipeg Coaches and
Executive members who were a huge part of the running of such a successful

Admission for this day was a non- perishable item for the Winnipeg Harvest.
We were happy to see that the very large yellow bucket was filled, thanks to
all who donated.

Pictures are on the site for those who would like to enjoy.

Many Thanks to all,

Karen Landers
Head Coach
Skate Winnipeg

Skate Winnipeg's CanSkater of the Year!!

(Tia Madrigga with Karen Landers - Skate Winnipeg Head Coach)

Tia Madrigga our CanSkater of the year is seen here being awarded her medal at our Family Skate during our Spring School on the night when the parents get to participate in the lesson. We all come together for the warm up after which the parents and siblings get a little lesson on what their skaters have been working on. It is always lots of fun and many parents actually come away with a real feeling of their skaters accomplishments. A few moms said, “wow, it isn’t as easy as the kids make it look!”

Congratulations Tia, and everyone keep up the great work!
